Donald Trump has become the 47th president of the United States following his decisive victory over Kamala Harris.
The call was made at around 1:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time after elections observer Decision Desk HQ, along with multiple mainstream media outlets, called Pennsylvania and Alaska for Trump, bringing him to exactly 270 votes in the Electoral College. As of press time, Trump has officially won five out of seven swing states – Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania were called first. Wisconsin became the fourth swing state to be called for Trump, and Michigan was the fifth.
Arizona and Nevada are yet to be called, but Trump currently has a significant lead in both states. Trump currently has 295 Electoral College votes. If the two remaining swing states are called for him, he will win the election with 312 votes to Harris’ 226.
For comparison, Trump won the 2016 election against then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with 306 pledged Electoral College votes – he lost Nevada’s six votes – to Clinton’s 232.
Officially, the results from 2016 and 2020 also show Trump losing the popular vote – by over 2.8 million votes to Clinton in 2016 and by over seven million votes to President Joe Biden in 2020.
This time around, Trump is on track to win the popular vote and become one of two Republican candidates to be able to win the popular vote since 1992 – former President George W. Bush won the popular vote during his reelection bid in 2004.
Exit polls suggest that Trump could win around 51 percent of the popular vote to Harris’ 47 percent.
Some races in the Senate and House of Representatives have yet to be called, but so far Republicans have already won 52 seats in the Senate and 198 in the House.
Harris was supposed to make a speech on election night at her campaign’s election afterparty at Howard University in Washington, D.C., a historically Black university where she got her undergraduate degree.
However, she canceled after the verdict came in and Trump’s lead became insurmountable.
In a statement, Harris campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond claimed that the vice president is still in the fight.
“We still have votes to count. We still have states that have not been called yet. We will continue, overnight, to fight to make sure that every vote is counted, that every voice has spoken,” he said. “So you won’t hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow.”
Harris was supposed to speak to thousands of Howard alumni, Democratic activists, Biden administration officials and other supporters, who had packed into the school’s Yard, where she hoped to use the historic space where many influential individuals had delivered addresses in the past – including late South African President Nelson Mandela – to proclaim her victory.
Meanwhile, Trump addressed his supporters in West Palm Beach, Florida, in the early morning hours of Wednesday.
“This is a magnificent victory for the American people, that will allow us to make America great again,” he said. “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate.”
“It’s a political victory that our country has never seen before,” he added. “I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president.”
