Former President Donald Trump has announced a repeat rally at Butler, Pennsylvania – the same place where he was shot by Thomas Matthew Crooks on July 13.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, less than a week after the Secret Service urged him not to hold outdoor events. “I will be going back to Butler for a big and beautiful rally, honoring the soul of our beloved firefighting hero, Corey [Comperatore], and those … brave patriots injured two weeks ago. What a day it will be,” he wrote.
In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump declared that he won’t be scaling back his campaign events. According to some pundits, the Secret Service’s request for Trump to avoid holding outdoor events and limit his appearances to indoor engagements is a form of election interference intended to suppress enthusiasm for the former president.
“I will continue to do outdoor rallies, and Secret Service has agreed to substantially step up their operation. They are very capable of doing so,” Trump posted. “No one can ever be allowed to stop or impede free speech or [any] gathering.”
Crooks fired shots at Trump during the earlier campaign rally at Butler. However, the bullet only grazed the ear of the former president. Comperatore, former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department, was killed while shielding his family from gunfire. Two other individuals, James Copenhaver and David Dutch, suffered critical injuries but received medical treatment. Both men have been discharged and have released statements thanking people for their support.
Secret Service snipers neutralized the 20-year-old Crooks moments after his failed assassination attempt on Trump. But the agency’s slow response prompted much criticism from Republicans, which eventually led to the resignation of Kimberly Cheatle as the Secret Service director on July 23.
According to LifeSiteNews, the Secret Service has been roundly criticized for its failure to protect Trump on July 13. It has blamed everything from miscommunication with local police to claiming the building Crooks shot from was not only outside the perimeter but was too dangerous for agents to be stationed on because it had a “sloped” roof.
Several attendees alerted law enforcement about Crooks even before he fired at Trump. He also flew a drone around the campaign rally venue days before, and even researched the earlier assassination of President John F. Kennedy at the hands of Lee Harvey Oswald.
The Washington, D.C.-based Heritage Foundation also found that mobile devices that “regularly visited” Crooks’ home and place of work also visited a location near the headquarters of the Secret Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). According to the conservative think tank, this raises the possibility that the Deep State was involved in goading Crooks to take action against Trump.
Even U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) has expressed doubts about the FBI’s ability to probe the failed assassination attempt. “We cannot trust the FBI to do an open and honest investigation,” he told Fox News.
Republicans have blamed the attack on Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas repeatedly declining requests by the Trump campaign for additional security over the past two years. A day before Cheatle resigned, she admitted before Congress that the July 13 assassination attempt was the agency’s biggest failure in decades.
Despite these setbacks, Trump showed up during the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin with a bandaged ear, accepting the party’s presidential nomination. Following this, he and his running mate U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) held a campaign rally at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The location has a maximum capacity of around 12,000, but the number of supporters exceeded that number.
