Republicans on Judiciary Committee DEMAND new special counsel to investigate Comey, Lynch and Hillary

Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee think turnabout is fair play when it comes to special counsel investigations, so they are demanding that the Justice Department appoint another one to investigate former Obama administration officials.

In a letter sent to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Judiciary Republicans seek “assistance in restoring public confidence in our nation’s justice system” via the appointment of a special counsel to investigate former FBI Director James Comey, former AG Loretta Lynch, and former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for alleged ethics and legal violations relating to “the 2016 election and its aftermath.”

“The unbalanced, uncertain, and seemingly unlimited focus of the special counsel’s investigation has led many of our constituents to see a dual standard of justice that benefits only the powerful and politically well-connected,” the GOP members said in their letter.

In recent weeks Rosenstein caved to Democratic pressure and appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller, a close friend of Comey, to investigate President Donald J. Trump and members of his campaign and administration, for alleged “Russian collusion” and other matters related to Moscow and last year’s election.

“Many Democrats and members of the Washington media previously called for a ‘special prosecutor’ to investigate Russian influence on the election and connections with the Trump campaign,” said the letter. “Not surprisingly, once you actually made the decision to appoint a special counsel, the calls for further investigations by congressional committees continued, focused on allegations that have heretofore produced no evidence of criminality, despite the fact that over a year has passed since the opening of the original FBI investigation.

“Political gamesmanship continues to saturate anything and everything associated with reactions to President Trump’s executive decisions, and reveals the hypocrisy of those who refuse to allow the Special Counsel’s investigation to proceed without undue political influence,” the letter continued. (Related: House conservatives will press for investigation into James Comey, Loretta Lynch to counter against Deep State attacks against White House.)

Republican members of the Judiciary Committee listed 14 different issues they believe a second special counsel ought to be appointed to investigate. They include:

— Why Lynch directed Comey to mislead Americans by referring to the FBI probe into Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified emails as a “matter” rather than a criminal investigation, which is what it was;

— How it was that Clinton could so obviously break statutes governing the handling of classified information and not be charged, when other Americans have been charged and convicted for doing similar things;

— How State Department employees and Clinton were allowed to determine which of her communications to turn over to investigators, and why Clinton was allowed to delete some 33,000 of them instead of handing them over to the FBI;

— Disclosures of Clinton-related documents by Wikileaks that concerned the Clinton Foundation’s potentially illegal international dealings;

— What Comey knew about the Russian purchase of Uranium One and whether the sale’s approval was tied to any donations received throughout the process of the deal by the Clinton Foundation from parties involved in the sale;

— Post-election charges by President Trump about being “wire-tapped” by the Obama administration (which has since become clear the Obama administration was not only monitoring Team Trump communications with foreign actors but also unmasking them);

— Lynch’s meeting with Bill Clinton on an airport tarmac just days before Hillary Clinton was to be interviewed by the FBI over her mishandled emails;

— Comey’s admitted leaks of a memo to a friend at Columbia University — who summarily leaked it to The New York Times — regarding an alleged meeting the former FBI director had with Trump;

— Comey’s and the FBI’s reliance on political hit firm Fusion GPS and its opposition research on the Trump campaign, to include the “dossier” the FBI ostensibly relied upon to launch its probe of Team Trump — and whether the FBI paid anyone who was connected to the dossier in any way (and if so, whom).

“You have the ability now to right the ship for the American people so these investigations may proceed independently and impartially,” the Judiciary Republicans wrote.
